Solid Lewis Acid catalyzed Mechanochemical Rearrangement Reactions: A Toolbox for Applied Organic Chemistry

Abstract

The growing environmental problems have influenced the way chemists need to reflect their own chemistry and classic synthesis, relying often on environmentally hazardous solvents and auxiliaries, which end up in waste and cannot be recycled. In order to pursue the goals of efficient, environmental and green chemical processes, many organic reactions must be redesigned. After the 12 rules of Green Chemistry were proposed in 1998, ball milling has emerged as a promising new possibility for solvent-free synthesis. Mechanochemistry offers a clean and efficient alternative to conventional synthesis but still, this field is at the very beginning and research just kicked off. As a result of these unexplored possibilities, this project aims to combine mechanochemical knowledge for the study of various rearrangement reactions together with reusable solid Lewis acids to develop a general mild synthetic strategy and a toolbox for future organic academic chemists. Additionally, a further aim of this proposal will be to develop protocols for a green and sustainable implementation and replacement in industry for solvent-free synthetic steps of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), natural products and other highly valuable organic chemicals.

Biography

Reinhard P. Kaiser was born in Straubing, Germany, in 1989. He received his PhD (2018) in organic chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Martin Kotora at the Charles University in Prague. After returning from a postdoctoral position at the RWTH in Aachen in the group of Prof. Carsten Bolm he is currently working at the IOCB in Prague. His research interests include Green organic chemistry, C-H activation, transition-metal catalyzed reactions, Flow reactor technique and Solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis for the application in organic synthesis.
