The IOCB Summer Student Programme, which attracts undergraduates from European universities to laboratories in Prague, commenced in mid-July for the eighth time. Altogether twenty-three young people have joined one of sixteen research groups under the supervision of local PhD students. Over the next eight weeks, they will work on specific projects and present their findings to colleagues in a conference at the end of August.
IOCB Prague has been welcoming aspiring students of these fields since 2016, drawing growing interest each year. The primary attraction is excellent science and practical assistance. The institute has arranged accommodation for the participants at one of the local student dormitories and provided each with a stipend of up to €1,000, depending on the length of their stay.
"It is important for us that the institute spreads its reputation among university students from across Europe. We offer opportunities for interesting work together with prominent scientists in hope of re-attracting young people to join us again later in their studies, this time as part of graduate and postdoctoral programs," says Pavlína Maloy Řezáčová, Vice-Director for Research at IOCB Prague.
This effort is bearing fruit already, as several attendees of the IOCB summer school have joined the ranks of doctoral students at the institute in recent years.
