Unique in the World
- Our Center of Aviation and Space Research, an international excellence center, focuses on unique problem-oriented interdisciplinary research in aerospace and aeronautics. Formed in 2016, the center combines activities, years of experience and advanced infrastructure of aviation and space research at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of CTU Prague. The people involved in the center’s work are well-recognized experts in continuous mechanics, aerospace research and simulation, actively collaborating with the Faculty’s institutes.
- We develop unique and effective solutions to reduce combustion engine emissions. One of such relies on adding gas (natural gas, propane-butane, hydrogen or their combinations) to the fuel mix. Another solution builds on spark-ignited lean burn engines with a scavenged pre-chamber and accelerated combustion of the mix.
- Our unique research focuses on the area of capturing CO2 from combustion processes (CCS-carbon capture and storage) using biomass (Bio-CCS) and utilizing such captured CO2 (Bio-CCU). The research specifically emphasizes oxy-fuel combustion of various biofuels in the fluid layer, the most promising approach from the perspective of new equipment, and the entire chain associated with it, including oxygen production. Oxy-gasification of biomass with minimum CO2 production is another key focus of our research. The third key direction entails technology for utilizing CO2 captured from oxy-fuel combustion to produce liquid biofuels.
- We created S.A.W.E.R., a unique technology that was named best technology project at the EXPO 2020 exhibition in Dubai. In one single day, the equipment collects around 1,000 litres of water from dry desert air to turn it into drinking water by mineralization. Fitted in a container, the equipment is entirely autonomous; photovoltaic and thermal solar collectors provide energy to the system accompanied by solutions to accumulate electricity, heat and cold. Moreover, S.A.W.E.R. includes an original biofactor from the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences with procedures for the cultivation of sand soil, irrigation and nutrition of crops in the desert.
- We participate in a number of attractive and unique technical solutions in CERN. We mainly work with the SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) and the pixel part of the inner detector. In the recent years, some of our students stayed at CERN to take part in diverse activities focused on the development, testing and maintenance of the detector. Much of the collaboration is related to the detector cooling.
Unique in Czechia
- We are unique in maintaining a holistic approach to mechanical structures within the framework of integrated engineering. Our particular focus is on production machinery, automobiles and their modern powertrains. Excellent performance, cost and environmental characteristics are achieved through evaluations of both VR simulations and experiments.
- Our research on machine tools is unique. We develop new machine tool concepts, such as the patented principle of multi-spindle lathes boosting productivity by 75% or the application of mechatronic stiffness based on cable structures for gantry-type machining centres.
- We uniquely integrate and develop activities relating to computer simulation, including the ability to combine own and commercial simulation programs for non-standard equipment. Cooperating with the industry, we have extended and modernized some of our courses to ensure top-level software support for the master’s projects of our students.
- We are unique in biomechanics. Benefiting from clinical practice collaborations, our research and development activities put an emphasis on replacements of all major joints. We also participate in the fitting of implants and testing of 3D printing materials based on biocompatible titanium alloys.
- Our history of teaching mechanical engineering is unique. We are the oldest faculty of mechanical engineering in the Czech Republic, offering programmes in all fields of mechanical engineering.
