CHePiCC

'Cultural Heritage Protection in Climate Change online' project concludes with launch of online course and publication of Summer University Concept

The Erasmus+ project "Cultural Heritage Protection in Climate Change online" (CHePiCC online) translates cutting-edge research on climate change and heritage protection into a distance and blended learning programme for university students and teachers. As a successful outcome of the project, the Massive Open Online Course and a tested and evaluated concept for a transdisciplinary summer university in June 2023 have now been published.

Our cultural heritage faces a number of risks. Climate change and the resulting natural disasters pose one of the greatest threats to cultural heritage and cultural landscapes in the 21st century.
The fundamental scientific need in relation to cultural heritage and its protection is to reconnect cultural heritage (tangible, movable or immovable, but also intangible) with society and to promote understanding of its significance, shared values and identities.

CHePiCC online aims to reintegrate the topic into higher education, to empower future generations to protect cultural heritage and thus identity for the future, and to promote behavioural change in relation to cultural heritage protection and climate change.

The transdisciplinary composition of the CHePiCC online project partnership, with expertise in the fields of cultural heritage protection, cultural landscapes, climatology and climate change, construction technology, material handling, preventive measures, monument protection, conservation and restoration, ensures the necessary holistic approach to the broad topic of cultural heritage protection.

CHePiCC online course - cultural heritage protection regardless of time and place

Up to now, there has been no teaching offer in the higher education sector that combines different disciplines to ensure a holistic approach to successfully deal with the protection of cultural heritage and climate change.
The CHePiCC online course now opens up a new level of university teaching: it is freely accessible via the iMooX platform and can be completed free of charge, regardless of time and place. Its integrative, modular and transdisciplinary structure allows it to be integrated into existing university curricula and to address learners at different levels of knowledge. With more than 20 hours of content, the course covers the four main themes: Climate Change, Cultural Landscapes, Cultural Heritage Protection and Sustainable Prevention for Cultural Landscapes and Cultural Property.

Summer University Concept - Cultural Heritage Protection Becomes Transdisciplinary

With the "Summer University Concept", CHePiCC online presents a tested and evaluated concept for a transdisciplinary Summer University on Cultural Landscapes and Climate Change, which can be adapted to any cultural landscape and built heritage in Europe, in any climate zone and with the very specific risks of climate change in each case. It thus fills the gap of a common concept that brings together different disciplines and their knowledge and materials for hybrid, practice-oriented teaching at university level.
The concept is designed as a blended learning add-on to the online course: an extensive online self-study phase is preceded by an on-site event. This is because it is important to gain practical experience, to get to know the respective built heritage and cultural landscapes on site, and to develop and test tailor-made measures for a specific location. The networking of participants from the cultural heritage sector and emergency responders is proving to be of great benefit to both sides when it comes to training in cultural heritage protection.
