Období manýrismu a raného baroka přineslo širší využití různých grafických technik při kresbě i malbě rostlin. Rostliny byly společně s hmyzem a jinými drobnými živočichy oblíbenou předlohou pro zátiší a jiné formy výtvarného umění. Vedle zachycení jejich celkového estetického dojmu tehdejší umělci věnovali dostatek času dokonalému zachycení rostlinných detailů.
