Osel somálský (Equus africanus somaliensis) je v současnosti nejohroženějším koňovitým savcem světa. Rovněž v záchranných chovech zoologických zahrad tvoří početně nejmenší skupinu koňovitých. Autor se věnuje historii a současnosti jeho chovu v lidské péči a poznatkům z jeho reprodukční biologie.
