Mark Gilbert's lecture: The Italian Communist Party and Late Stalinism, 1944-1956

Historian Mark Gilbert is a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna. His new book Italy Reborn: From Fascism to Democracy, an impressive portrait of post-war democracy-building in Italy and the role of political parties, including the Italian Communist Party, is forthcoming from Penguin Publishers.

We invite you to his Prague lecture, for which he has chosen the topic of the ideological and power relations in the Italian Communist Party in the 1940s and 1950s. He will present, among other things, documents that document hitherto unknown contacts between senior officials of Italy and the Central European Communist Parties. These new interpretations problematize the usual picture of the late Stalinist era.

The lecture, organized by the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Deutsches Historisches Institut Warschau, will take place on Wednesday, 22 November 2023 at 5:30 pm, room P301, Faculty of Arts, Charles University (Palachovo nám. 1, Prague 1).
