Mikhail Shifman (William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute, University of Minnesota, USA): Georg Placzek - A Nuclear Physics Odyssey
Georg Placzek (1905-1955) was one of the pioneers of quantum physics, Niels Bohr’s assistant, and the only Czechoslovakia citizen who became a part of the Manhattan Project during the WWII. After his untimely death Placzek and his scientific contributions were essentially forgotten in the West. Aleš Gottvald and I collected unknown archive documents shedding light on his adventurous life and some of the “Placzek’s stories” and published them in a recent book "George Placzek: A Nuclear Physicist's Odyssey”.
This talk is non-technical and is intended for a wide audience.
