Food, everyday life, and generational transformations. Longitudinal qualitative research in rural Czech Republic.

HALDIS HAUKANES

The lecture will present ongoing research on the topic “Food and food work in times of crises.” The project builds on and is a continuation of ethnographic research that Haukanes conducted in the 1990s and early 2000s in rural South Bohemia and South Moravia. The aim of the current study is to unravel longitudinal trends, i.e., changes and continuities that have occurred over the last 20-30 years. Focus is on people’s daily food practices, including their food self-provisioning, and on the sharing and circulation of food within and among families. Particular attention is paid to the effects of the current economic situation (increase in energy prices, general inflation) on people’s food work. Haukanes will share some very preliminary findings from her ongoing fieldwork seen in the context of her previous research and provide reflections on longitudinally in ethnographic research and the challenges it entails.

Haldis Haukanes is a social anthropologist and Professor at the Department of Health Promotion and Development, University of Bergen, Norway. Her research interests include rural social transformation, food studies, and gender and reproduction. Haukanes has done ethnographic research in the Czech Republic since 1990. She is also engaged in gender and reproductive health related research in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is the co-editor of the recent volume Intimacy and mobility in an era of hardening borders.
