Postdoctoral Position in the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences

Astronomical Institute (http://www.asu.cas.cz/en/about/about-the-institute) of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic announces a 2-year postdoctoral position, starting on 1/1/2024, in the Relativistic Astrophysics group (https://astro.cas.cz/) in the project "Accreting black holes in the new era of X-ray polarimetry missions" (https://astro.cas.cz/expro).

The postdoc will model the X-ray emission of the accretion discs in Galactic black holes in X-ray binary sources with the emphasis on the polarimetric properties. This includes both the thermal disc emission as well as disc re-processing of the illumination by X-ray corona. The main application of the modelling will be the interpretation of recent IXPE polarimetric observations. To this aim he/she will use currently available public radiative transfer and polarimetric codes (TITAN, CLOUDY, STOKES) and also use/modify relativistic polarimetric numerical codes developed in our group. Thus experience with C, C++ and Python computer languages is needed. Some experience with astronomical data analysis in X-ray domain (using Xspec or similar software) and knowledge of
relativistic astrophysics (especially in the field of accretion theory, radiative processes, ray-tracing in curved space-time) will be appreciated. High motivation and ability to work independently as well as in the team collaboration are expected.

The position is opened for 1 year, after which it can be prolonged for another year based on applicant's successful performance. The salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes full health insurance.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD degree in the field and present a certificate of that by the date of employment. Preferences will be given to early-stage researchers. A necessary condition for the appointment is to satisfy the legal requirements for being employed in the Czech Republic.

The Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (ASU) invites applications for research scientist positions in the fields of stellar physics and physics of small solar system bodies.

 

ASU is a public research institution and the largest professional astronomical organization in the Czech Republic, located at Ondrejov observatory and in Prague.

Two positions for research scientists are opened in the field of stellar physics, specifically the physics of massive hot stars. The successful applicant will collaborate with researchers in the working group of hot stars. The research of this group is focused on studies of massive hot stars at their different evolutionary stages. The studied objects can be either single or binary or multiple systems. Furthermore, the group is involved in observational and theoretical investigations of the chemistry and dynamics of the circumstellar material of evolved massive stars. The research of massive stars is complemented by studies of low-mass stars in late evolutionary stages. Theoretical studies in modeling stellar atmospheres with a natural focus on hot massive stars are also a part of the group's research. The group is also involved in astroinformatics research in order to develop new methods and tools to deal with the exponentially increasing amount of data in astronomy.

One position for a research scientist is opened in the field of physics of small solar system bodies, specifically the physics of meteoroids, meteors and meteorites. The group of meteor physics observes meteors and performs theoretical interpretations of the observations. The basic observational system is the European Fireball Network. The observational data are used to study physical processes during the penetration of meteoroids into planetary atmospheres, including radiation, ionization and meteoroid fragmentation. The physical properties and chemical composition of different types of meteoroids, their origin and distribution in the solar system and their relation to comets, asteroids and meteorites are being determined.

Basic requirements:

  • PhD degree in astronomy and astrophysics obtained before 2020

  • Demonstrated activity in the respective field of research

Preferential qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral stay at an institute outside Czechia

A necessary condition is to satisfy legal requirements for employment in the Czech Republic (EU member state). Salary will be based on the domestic level (cca 1700 EUR/month before taxes) and it includes health insurance. There is a possibility of institute accommodation in Ondrejov. The starting date of employment is expected to be 1st of January 2024, but it is negotiable.
