Why Should Quotas Pose a Threat?

Zuzana Uhde

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2006, 7 (1): 6-10

The author addresses in the article the debate concerning the application of quotas for the assertion of equal representation of men and women in politics. She develops the theoretical argumentation in order to disprove some objections formulated by Ivana Střílková in her article "Dilemmas of Positive Discrimination and Gender Mainstreaming as a Potential Solution?" published in journal Gender, Equal Opportunities, Research, volume 6, number 2. The author based her argument on the theory of Nancy Fraser and Iris Young. With reference to some practical and empirical mentions she argues for efficacy of quotas for assertion of parity of participation...

Integration and Solidarity (Caring Daughters and Caring Sons)

Marie Přidalová

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2006, 7 (1): 1-5

This review study deals with a phenomenon of adult children's caregiving for their aging parents and focuses on gender themes in this field. Findings of empirical and theoretical studies mostly of British and American authors are introduced. Based on both foreign and Czech literature sources the author provides a general view of the filial responsibility attitudes and the actual behavior. Starting from the fact that women (daughters in particular) form the majority of all caregivers, she presents some of the explanations for this state (socialization theory, theory of men's and women's different position in labor market, same-gender preferences theory)...

Towards Gender Sources of Individualizing Habitus

Marcel Tomášek

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2006, 7 (1): 11-14

The text links the spread of solo living with the unequal arrangement of traditional households (either regarding respondents' families of origin or in view of the experience with their partners) which is taken as the essential source of longer term advance of the individualizing habitus. The qualitatively indicated categories highlight the mechanisms of the emergence and social reproduction of individualizing habitus. If the traditional gender split of space - men's public space and field of power versus women's private space of household and reproduction as Bourdieu argues - is taken into account, the logical expression of the emerging individualizing...

Believing Singles in the Light of Changing Forms of Faith Practising and Individualization in the Domain of Religion

Michaela Bartošová

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2006, 7 (1): 15-18

The study, while applying the qualitative method, is focused on financially self-sufficient young people (25-33), who live alone and belong to the Catholic Church. Through qualitative interviews and their following analysis the group of religious singles is specified. This category appears to be interesting for its internal incongruity, which results from the tendency of these people not to seclude from the Christian ideal in the area of intimacy and family and, at the same time, from the need of independence and development of themselves. While in the mainstream part of society alternative partner relationships come extensively into play which enables...

The Division of Household Labour in Families with Children

Jana Bierzová

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2006, 7 (1): 19-25

The study examines the division of household labour in Czech families with underage children and gender differences in the extent and type of household activities. The paper discusses the different approaches to explaining the division of household labour as well as criticisms of these approaches. The neoclassical economic theory of rational choice, the relative resources theory, the time availability hypotheses, the gender ideology approach and the socialisation theories are presented. The theoretical part is followed by an analysis of data from sociological survey of the families with underage children. This survey confirmed that women's overall...

Do men and Women in the Czech Republic have Different Approaches to Work?

Marta Vohlídalová

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2006, 7 (1): 26-31

As we can support with objective evidence, the position of men and women on the Czech labour market is not equal: (i) There is an obvious gender pay gap. (ii) Women are overrepresented in lower-paid professions with lower social prestige. Many authors (e.g. Čermáková, Crompton, Bradley) concerned with explanation of the reasons of the gender inequalities on the labour market emphasize the role of structural barriers and gender stereotypes. In this paper I am trying to answer the question whether it is either the existence of structural barriers or different attitudes of men and women towards work that is the cause of the obvious gender inequality on...
