Structural limitations in bulk materials make the further shrinking of technology devices increasingly difficult and expensive to deliver. Two-dimensional (2D) materials offer a promising alternative due to their electronic tunability, sub-nanometer thickness, and surface-only nature. We exploit the perfect match between the extreme sensitivity of 2D semiconductors to their environment and sensitivity of electrochemistry to the electronic properties at materials' surfaces using cutting-edge spectroelectrochemical characterization.
