The unique project, in which scientists from the Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the CAS joined forces with colleagues from the University of Chemical Technology in Prague and engineers from SQS Fiber Optics and MATEX PM, won the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic Award in the Business category.
Within the project Thulium fiber lasers for industrial and medical applications, the Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the CAS developed thulium optical fibers, fiber components, measuring instruments for their production and thulium lasers for industrial and medical applications.
Thulium lasers work at twice the wavelength of conventional lasers and are therefore suitable for materials such as plastics or leather. Fiber lasers have higher efficiency, reliability and lower operating costs than other types of lasers. Fiber-optic light also works better on robotic stations.
"The intention of this project was the natural urge to use our know-how in the field of fiber lasers for something useful. To produce lasers that will really be used," explains project leader Pavel Honzátko from the Institute of Photonics and Electronics. The industrial partners of the project have already introduced part of the results into production.
