Prevention of gender-based violence in work environment of Czech public research institutions and universities

Project objectives
The project aims to prevent gender-based violence at academic and research institutions in the Czech Republic.
Why did we get involved in the project?
Research (2012) has shown that there is a high prevalence of violence against women in the Czech Republic (59% of women have experienced it) and that occurs mainly in a workplace (for 28% of women in the Czech Republic) or during studies. The Horizon 2020 UniSAFE project shows that almost two out of three people in academia have experienced some form of gender-based violence. Women experienced it in 66% of cases. Furthermore, the research shows that even more likely to experience violence are LGBTQ+ people (68%), people from ethnic minorities (69%) and people with disabilities (72%).
Awareness in the academic environment on this topic still needs to be improved, so we decided to participate in developing a universal educational tool for this purpose.
What are the project outputs?
The main project output is publicly available training videos tailored to Czech research institutions and universities. The training tool contains two sets of videos linked to test questionnaires. The first set of training videos targets persons employed by public academic and research institutions in the Czech Republic. The second set targets HR persons working in recruitment and persons working in evaluation committees to support the prevention of discriminatory behaviour, as well as persons in decision-making and management positions.
Topics of the training videos
The training videos address important phenomena that may occur in an academic environment. The topics include:
- Gender bias against women in academia and research.
- Gender-balanced expression in the academic and research environment.
- Sexual harassment in research and academia.
- What should we do when we encounter sexual harassment in research and academia?
- Psychological forms of gender-based violence.
- Bias Against Women in the Academic Hiring Process
- What Kinds of Obstacles do Women face in Research and Academia?
- Economic Aspects of Gender Inequality in Research and Academia.
- The Gender Dimension within Research.
- Economic violence in the context of reconciliation work-life balance in research and academia.

About the training tool
The training packages provide information and policies that address gender discrimination and gender-based violence in academia and research.
The training is e-learning based:
- At the beginning of the training, you will complete an entry questionnaire.
- After that, you can watch ten videos on ten different topics. Each video is paired with a verification questionnaire. After submitting it, you will see the correct answers.
- At the end of the training, you will complete an evaluation questionnaire, which will allow you or your employer to assess your level of learning and understanding.
Trained employees will have the ability to recognise and name gender-based violence in the workspace and will know how to behave in these cases.
