Cristina is a Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences (SPBS) at the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences and is a Funded Investigator in the FutureNeuro SFI-Research Centre. She is Pharmacist with MSc and PhD in Pharmacology, which were focused on epilepsy treatment (Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil). In 2013, shortly after her PhD, Cristina was awarded an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship and joined Prof. Henshall’s group at RCSI. From her postdoctoral training, she has relevant discoveries on microRNA-based therapies and the development of novel oligonucleotide delivery routes for disease-modification in epilepsy. In 2017, Cristina was appointed as Honorary Lecturer at RCSI and was awarded a postdoctoral SFI-TIDA to explore alternative approaches for targeted brain delivery. This led her to participate in the USA-based training on Entrepreneurship and Innovation (SFI/NSF I-Corps). In 2020, Cristina received the inaugural CURE Epilepsy Cameron Boyce Foundation Taking Flight Award, which funds her research into the restoration of circadian function as a therapy for epilepsy. To date, Cristina has received nine Distinction Prizes, including the prestigious Harinarayan Young Neuroscientist Award (2015) and the Grass Foundation Young Investigator Award (2017), endowed by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and American Epilepsy Society (AES), respectively; and the Trailblazer Award 2019 (shared with her team) endowed by UCBerkeley, UCSF and Stanford Universities for the I-Corps Programme. Cristina actively serves to ILAE scientific committees and as a Treasurer for the Young Epilepsy Section (YES)/ILAE (2021-2023). Nationally, she closely works with Epilepsy Ireland fostering public and patient involvement (PPI) in research and at RCSI serves as the Academic Director for the International Citizenship Programme and supports other EDI activities.
