Tis červený (Taxus baccata) je na přírodě blízkých stanovištích České republiky poměrně vzácná, a tudíž chráněná dřevina. Paleobotanická a historická data však ukazují, že tomu tak minimálně do vrcholného středověku nebylo. Naopak, tis byl překvapivě běžný. Příčinou pozdějšího vymizení je zjevně masivní těžba pro jeho atraktivní a technologicky cenné dřevo. Případ tisu ilustruje dalekosáhlé proměny naší krajiny a biodiverzity v průběhu posledních několika staletí.

The European Common Yew (Taxus baccata) is a relatively rare and therefore protected tree species in the natural habitats of the Czech Republic. However, paleobotanical and historical data show that this was not the case until at least the High Middle Ages. In fact it was surprisingly widespread. The reason for its later disappearance is apparently massive felling for its attractive and technologically valuable wood. The case of the yew illustrates the far-reaching changes in local landscape and biodiversity over the past centuries.
