The Department of Materials Analysis incorporates analytical laboratories with costly experimental devices intended to be utilized by a broad range of research programs. Characterization of composition, structure, and microstructure of materials is a necessity for any other experiments on novel materials, technology feedback and their development.

Laboratories aggregated in the Department of Materials Analysis perform materials characterization by methods of X-ray diffraction (both powder and single-crystal), X-ray reflectivity, electron microscopy (both transmission and scanning) and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy. They operate and support costly experimental infrastructure (electron microscopes, X-ray diffractometers) accessible to other research teams and provides training of the researchers to work with these devices and support their research.
