Sinara Gharibyan Wins the PEDD Young Scholar Award

We are thrilled to announce that Sinara Gharibyan, a CERGE-EI PhD student, won the Young Scholar Award at the recent Conference on the Political Economy of Democracy and Dictatorship in Münster.

The PEDD Young Scholar Award, initiated in 2022, recognizes the best paper authored by young scholars under the age of 35.

In her award-winning paper "Activated History and Voting. Decoupling Collective and Family Remembrance", Sinara studies the backlash effect of activated history. The main idea of the paper is to disentangle the effect of collective memory from that of family memory. The results indicate that while both types of memory have similar backlash effects, the underlying mechanism is different: family memory works as a trauma while collective memory of the same event works through social capital.

“The conference is a lovely one, with great keynote speakers in the field, around 80 active participants, and − as I was told − around 17 papers that were eligible for the award. Winning such a prize at an international conference is prestigious,” said Christian Ochsner, a CERGE-EI faculty member and Sinara’s supervisor.

In her research, Sinara focuses on economic history, especially when it comes to understanding how political economics, gender roles, and human capital intersect and influence each other.
