Nobel Prize Laureate Paul Milgrom Receives Honorary Scientific Degree from Charles University

On March 19, 2024, the world-renowned economist and former member of CERGE-EI’s Executive and Supervisory Committee (2015-2020) received the honorary scientific degree doctor honoris causa from Charles University.
The title recognizes outstanding scientific achievements in the recipient’s field of expertise and their significant contribution to the development of research in cooperation with Charles University.
Professor Paul Robert Milgrom was awarded the title of doctor honoris causa for his original contribution to auction theory, its deepening, and the discovery of new auction formats. At the same time, the awarded title recognizes his help in developing economics as a discipline at Charles University. "Professor Milgrom's contributions to our society are increasingly important, especially at a time when blinded ideology often replaces rational discussion and deprives us of solutions that are physically and economically feasible," said Tomas Karásek, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University.
Milgrom is one of the founders of modern economics. He helped apply game theory and information economics to a wide range of economic problems, including pricing policy, auctions, financial markets and industrial organisation. He won the Nobel Prize in Economics in October 2020.
"Excellent researchers are an inspiration for our students and scientists in their own work, they support them and enable them to work in unique workplaces," said the Rector of Charles University Milena Králíčková.
The title of doctor honoris causa may be awarded by the University to personalities who have made an outstanding international contribution to the development of science or culture or otherwise to the benefit of mankind.
Following the ceremony, Professor Milgrom returned to CERGE-EI where a packed conference room awaited him. Students, faculty and members of the wider public enjoyed a lecture focusing on his current research interest – market design as a solution to the current world water crisis.
