CERGE-EI Welcomes Marek Kapička as its New Director

 “Over more than 30 years, CERGE-EI has built a reputation of excellence in research and teaching. I am looking forward to further cultivating the reputation and increasing its impact in the region,” says Marek Kapička, the newly appointed director of CERGE-EI from January 1, 2024.

Marek Kapička has been an Associate Professor with tenure at CERGE-EI (under US permanent charter) since 2013. He is a Senior Researcher at the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He served as the Deputy Director for Research of CERGE and EI (2013–2015). He is also a member of the Executive and Supervisory Committee of CERGE-EI.

Prior to joining CERGE-EI faculty, Marek Kapička was an Associate Professor at U.C. Santa Barbara. He received his M.A. in Economics from Charles University in Prague and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He won the Young Economist Award awarded by the European Economic Association in 2003, and obtained the J. E. Purkyně Fellowship awarded by the Czech Academy of Sciences for the years 2013-2017. In his research, he focuses on macroeconomics, public finance, economic theory, and contract theory, and has published in journals such as the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Monetary Economics, the Review of Economic Dynamics, and the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics.

Marek Kapička has taken over the position of the director of CERGE-EI from Sergey Slobodyan. We are very thankful to Sergey for devoting the last five years to developing the institution. Read about CERGE-EI’s achievements in the last year.
