Excited-state (anti)aromaticity explains why Azulene disobeys Kasha’s Rule
Azulene, an archetypal anti-Kasha fluorophore, emits only from its second excited singlet state (S2). The cover shows an artistic representation of azulene in three different electronic states, S0, S1, and S2. While it is emissive from aromatic S2, it alleviates its antiaromaticity in S1 by a conical intersection. (Cover art: Tomáš Belloň / IOCB Prague)
