Conductivity and reactivity of liquid  metals, alloys and liquid metal solutions

Liquid metals, different kinds of liquid alloys and liquid metal composites are widely used in application in material science, soft matter research and even medicine. Despite their ubiquitous use there are still many open questions regarding their fundamental physical and chemical properties such as their composition, how they act as solvent or solute in solution or their surface characteristics. I will show how the experimental techniques of liquid micro-jets in combination with photo-electron spectroscopy can be applied to determine these properties as well as to characterize the conductivity and the reactivity of liquid metals and alloys. The research opens up new ways to investigate phenomena like the metal-insulator phase-transitions and suggest new insights into e.g. corrosion processes.11 am, Thursday, February 23 rd 2023 J.Heyrovský Institute Brdička Hall and video stream.

Dr. Schewe studied Physics at the Free University Berlin, Germany and graduated with a diploma in 2009. He then joined the research group of Prof. dr. Gerard Meijer at the Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max-Planck society. He received his PhD in 2015. After a short period as risk-analyst at an insurance company, he is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biology (IOCB) and the J. Heyrovsky Institute of the Czech Academy of Science.
