Second-Year Research Fellowships Recipients Announced for 2024
20 June, 2024
The winners of the 2024 CERGE-EI Second-Year Research Fellowships are known! Congratulations go to Tereza Hofrichterová, Astghik Galoyan and Zhandos Tursumbekov.
The Second-Year Research Fellowships are awarded for the best research proposals submitted by PhD in Economics students. The purpose of the fellowship is to facilitate the transition from course work to dissertation research and help students to fully concentrate on the first steps of their research career.
The academic committee have evaluated a total of 12 student submissions and selected the following winners for 2024:
The first prize of CZK 55 000 goes to Tereza Hofrichterová. Tereza proposes to study how the choice of healthcare services is affected by improved information about the quality of healthcare providers. She aims to develop and refine a theoretical model featuring informational asymmetries and to validate its predictions by running a field experiment in the setting of maternity hospitals in the Czech Republic.
The second prize of CZK 45 000 goes to Astghik Galoyan, who aims to originally revisit the longstanding debate about the threshold that defines sustainability of a country's public debt. In particular, she plans to build a macroeconomic model where agents, including financial intermediaries, constantly receive new information and adapt their behavior, which would cause the threshold to change over time.
The third prize of CZK 38 000 goes to Zhandos Tursumbekov. Zhandos intends to uncover and dissect the causes of the Kazakh famine of 1930-1933. By engaging in extensive effort of data collection and subsequent empirical analysis, he aims to disentangle and quantify the relative contribution of the two leading proposed explanations: Soviet collectivization, and weather or climate shocks.
