Haider Golam received the 2021 Otto Wichterle Prize
This year, twenty-four prominent young scientific talents will be awarded the Otto Wichterle Prize for 2021 by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic:. The ceremony will take place in Lanna’s Villa in Prague on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. The prizes will be awarded to the laureates by Eva Zažímalová, President of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
The award is intended for promising scientists who achieve top results in their fields, are holders of scientific degrees (Csc., Dr., Ph.D., DrSc.) and did not exceed the age of 35 at the time of submitting the proposal. Parental leave is not included in this period.
The award for young researchers is named after Professor Otto Wichterle in memory of the outstanding Czech chemist of world format, who became President of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences after November 1989.
It has been awarded since 2002 and is associated with a financial reward of less than 450,000 Czech crowns spread over three years.
II. SCIENTIFIC FIELD
Haider Golam, Ph.D., J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the CAS
The unique mechanical, optical and electronic properties of so-called 2D materials have long attracted the attention of physicists and chemists around the world. The most promising of these materials include monolayers formed by atoms of one element – such as graphene. It also enchanted Haider Golam (* 1988), a graduate of the University of Calcutta in India, who chose nano-science and technology at the Academia Sinica in Taiwan for postgraduate studies.
Haider Golam has been working at the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the CAS since 2018 in the department of low-dimensional systems. He is interested in both basic research and practical applications. For research he is also capable to design own high-performance optoelectronic devices, for example a unique graphene-based UV phototransistor. It also attracted the attention of the editors of the prestigious professional magazine Advanced Optical Materials and the article about it became the title text of the whole issue.
In addition to optics and optoelectronics, Haider Golam’s focus is also on plasmonics – a modern discipline that deals with the consequences of irradiating small conductive structures with light.
