CVF – Photography Research Centre

The CVF aims to investigate the history and theory of photography, create space for sharing and presenting its basic and applied research and actively cooperate with other subjects focusing on similar topics. Officially launched in the spring 2018 in correspondence with one priority research area of the institute – Photography of the 19th and 20th Centuries – the centre has become a unique platform for interdisciplinary, internationally-oriented research in the Czech republic.

Currently the CVF focuses on three research areas: early photography in Central Europe; early photomechanical printing; and photographic and photomechanical reproduction of art works in the first half of the 20th century. CVF members are involved in a number of research projects, two of which they also coordinate:

The Matrix of Photomechanical Reproductions: Histories of Remote Access to Art (Lumina quaeruntur, CAS, 2023–2027)

The Oldest Photographs in the Polná Municipal Museum: Rescue, research, accessibility (CAS Regional Cooperation programme, 2024–2026)

The CVF members closely cooperate with a number of renowned institutions focusing on the research on photography and visual culture in both the Czech Republic and abroad, such as PHRC De Montfort University (Leicester), Photoinstitut Bonartes (Vienna), CEFRES (Prague), Olomouc Museum of Art: SEFO, Sorbonne Université (Paris), FAMU (Prague).
