The Department of Musicology focuses on music history and theory from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries, with an emphasis on the Czech lands within broader European contexts. Key areas include thematic catalogues and editions of overlooked composers (Václav Kapsa), Italian opera, Mozart studies (Milada Jonášová), music aesthetics of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Roman Dykast), women in music, nineteenth-century salon culture (Anja Bunzel), Czech operetta (David Vondráček), and popular music (Aleš Opekar). Besides individual research, our team is developing a project on concert life in the Czech lands, which will include a database of events, venues, performers, and repertoire.
Regular major events include an annual conference on eighteenth-century Italian opera and a biennial Mozart symposium. The department oversees publishing projects with Academus Edition and Hudební věda, runs the lecture series Dialogo della musica and engages in public outreach. The department provides facilities for researchers applying for the Josef Dobrovský Fellowship. The staff cooperates with a number of academic institutions, including universities, and participates in the work of grant committees and editorial boards of discipline-specific journals.
