Use of algae for bio-indication and revitalization of polluted water and utilisation of biomass
1) Miniaturized growth algal assay will be implemented to evaluate limiting nutrients and the toxicity of algicides, in nuclear power station Temelín. Our goal is to eliminate development of algae in cooling systems. The growth assay will be compared with speedy evaluation by the fluorescence of chlorophyll, and also using brackish and marine microalgae as model organisms, there is a higher salinity in the cooling system.
2) Isolation and preparation of strains for screening for biologically active compounds will use strains from Algae collection at Třeboň as well as our new strains, isolated from extreme localities, e.g. snow algae, and cyanobacteria from thermal springs, in Bulgaria.
3) Revitalization of wastewaters from municipal water sewage using the alga Botryococcus braunii and production of biogas from the obtained biomass. First, cultivation of the alga in a laboratory in wastewater to learn optimal conditions for production of hydrocarbons (HC) - botryococcenes (source of energy) or exopolysaccharides (EPS) - compounds with potential antiviral activities. Secondly, after biomass acquisition with high amount of HC, modification of the algae cultivation in small ponds during cultivation season (May - September). Biomass will be taking and processing in biofermenter located in the sewage disposal plant with the aim of the production of pure energy - biogas. EPS produced in laboratory will serve for testing their antiviral activities.
