Getting to Prague

By plane

Prague is served by the Czech Republic's only international airport Ruzyne. One can reach Prague also from several other European airports by train or by car however that will take you several hours. The closest major airports are: Vienna (312km), Munich (360km), Berlin (354km), Frankfurt (550km) (see driving distances to other cities).

By train

Trains run daily between Prague and most major European cities; Paris, Amsterdam, Munich and Vienna are some major hubs. Within the Czech Republic, Czech Railways (CD) provides cheap, efficient service. Various passes are available.

By car

We would not recommend bringing a car to Prague. It is not much of use in Prague since virtually everything in Prague is reachable by the public transportation and you will face a major parking problem if you bring your car in. Parking in downtown is close to impossible and traffic police is always ready to immobilize your car by a parking boot if you were to park illegally. Hefty fines follow. Prague is a relatively safe city but there are occurrences of break-ins into cars.

Said that if you bring your car to the Czech Republic do not forget to buy a special "toll" sticker at the border crossing or at some gas station to be allowed to use high-speed highways. You run a risk of a fine if you do not have one and you are using high-speed highways (this does not apply to high-speed highways in cities).

Getting around

Arrival by plane - from the airport to downtown

Money - You can obtain Czech currency from the ATM machines in the airport arrival hall.

There are several transportation options:

  • CEDAZ (tel: +420 - 2 2011429) shuttle vans run every 30 minutes from 6:00am to 9:00pm between the airport and the city center (Namesti republiky) for CZK 90 or to metro (Dejvicka) for CZK 60. The trip to Dejvicka takes about 10 minutes. Tickets are available on board. CEDAZ also provides door-to-door service for a fixed price of CZK 480 for up-to four people to any destination in Prague. The CEDAZ stand is located just in front of the airport arrival hall.

  • Airport cabs (these are taxi's that can only be found at the airport) operated by a private company are parked outside the arrival hall and are clearly marked with VISA signs on the sides. These cabs will charge you for a trip between CZK 350 and CZK 850 depending on what part of the city you travel to. The trip to the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University will cost you about CZK 500. As with other similar services there are good drivers and bad drivers and we would recommend this service only to the people willing to take their chances with the bill. (In other words, you are on your own.)

  • City Transport Authority (MHD) runs bus No. 119 between the airport and metro station Dejvicka (green line - A) and bus No. 100 between the airport and metro station Zlicin (yellow line - B). These buses run approx. every 15 minutes from about 4:30am to 11:30pm. The trips take about 20 minutes. You can transfer then to the subway to get to the city center.

To go directly to the conference center, use bus No. 119 and at Dejvicka transfer either to green metro line A or tram No. 20. By metro go to station Malostranska and transfer to a tram No. 12, 20, 22, or 23 in the direction Ujezd. The conference site is only one stop away by tram from Malostranska. By tram No. 20 you can go directly from Dejvicka to the stop Malostranske namesti (12 minutes). Look uphill and you will see the building of Faculty of Math and Physics.

Do not forget to buy a CZK 20 ticket from a news-stand or from a yellow vending machine at the airport. You should also buy and validate a CZK 14 ticket for each suitcase. There is also a small information center of City Transport Authority in the older arrival hall where tickets can be purchased.

Public transportation

Public transportation - metro (subway), trams, and buses - is an excellent means of transport in Prague. It operates from 5 a.m. till midnight, and there are special night trams and buses. Tickets can be bought in yellow vending machines (in each metro station) or at news-stands for CZK 20. A ticket must be time-stamped upon boarding a bus or tram for the first time or at the entrance to the subway. A time-stamped ticket remains valid for the next 75 minutes. As long as the ticket is valid you can make as many transfers as you wish. A one day card can be purchased for CZK 80, a three-day card for CZK 220 and a seven-day card for CZK 280. On foot

This is an excellent and convenient option. Once in downtown you can reach many places on foot.

Taxi

See the section on getting to downtown from the airport for warnings. If you really want to use taxi it is advisable to order one by phone and get a quote on the fare at that time.
