A: Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) staining for glial cells in the spinal cord (orange). It was recently shown that glial cells may significantly contribute to pathological and chronic pain syndromes.

B: Vanniloid TRPV1 receptors are expressed in small diameter spinal cord dorsal root ganglion neurons, while calcium binding protein parvalbumin is present predominantly in the medium and large diameter cells. The nuclear staining (Hoechst) in blue is used as an additional nuclear marker for morfometric analysis.
