This section offers reports from the project.

    Comparative report and policy recommendations

Here below you can find a PDF version of the final publication from the KNOWING project, Knowing and Living in Academic Research: Convergence and Heterogeneity in the European Context edited by Ulrike Felt. The edited volume is published by the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Hard copies can be requested either from national teams or from the coordinator of the project.

    Constructing careers, creating communities

findings of the UK KNOWING research on knowledge, institutions and gender

This report presents the main findings of research exploring academic careers and
communities in the UK, conducted between 2006 and 2008 as part of the EC Sixth
Framework Programme project KNOWING: Knowledge, Institutions and Gender - An
East West Comparative Study. The report focuses on two main areas that we found presented particularly complex and important challenges for the analysis of knowledge, institutions and gender: the academic research career and ways of working together and alone in both disciplines.

    Comprehensive national reports

Building upon theories of knowledge production and gender and the research studies conducted previously in the project (discourse analysis, focus groups, participant observation and interviews with male and female researchers), each partner country has prepared a comprehensive national analysis of their findings. The attached document provides executive summaries of the national reports. Some partner countries will be publishing manuscripts; bibliographic information or PDF version of the reports will appear upon the finalisation of the national reports.

National Reports on ‚Epistemic Communities’: WP 5 Deliverable Report Summary

The objective of WP 5 of the EU FP6 project KNOWING was to conduct focus group interviews (FGs) to discuss first observations of previously done field work with researchers in both scientific fields (see reports on WPs 1-4) to analyse their reactions and feed back. A further aim was to investigate interactions among members of ‘epistemic communities’. The consortium worked out and agreed on three common topics of the FGs: (1) the role of disciplinarity in its different perspectives, (2) gender and (3) societal implications of research.

National Reports on Biographical Aspects of Career Paths: WP 4

The objective of WP 4 of the EU FP6 project KNOWING was to investigate scientists’ positioning within the scientific community and their own career paths in the broader context of their biographies through face-to-face in-depth interviews. The interviews were designed to identify concrete problematic issues within the scientific career of research participants and to uncover some salient aspects of their positioning within their epistemic and wider societal environment. The biographical focus around which the research interviews were built up and conducted was designated to interconnect institutional settings on the one hand and researchers’ positionings and trajectories on the other.

'Science in the Making': WP 3 Deliverable Report Summary

This report outlines the participant observation research undertaken by the five national teams involved in the KNOWING project under Workpackage 3. Between July 2006 and July 2007, we conducted on-site participant observation of ‘science in the making’ at selected institutional locations in the partner countries. Through the observation we aimed to gain information about the often tacit and informal ways in which science gets done, as well as to document the contexts in which it takes place in settings including offices, laboratories, conferences, meetings and classrooms.

Discourses of Gender in Institutions: Deliverable 2.1 executive summary

Eight research institutions from Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Slovakia, and United Kingdom, with consultants from the US, UK and the Czech Republic, have written the second deliverable, on the discourse analysis of gender dynamics and knowledge production practices in two leading research institutions in sociology or social work and in molecular biology or organic and biochemistry in each of the five participating countries.

Aim of the workpackage: In this part of the KNOWING project, there have been researched discursive patterns of textual production of two leading research institutions in sociology or social work and in molecular biology or organic chemistry and biochemistry in each of the five participating countries.
