Autor podrobně popisuje taxonomii a historii objevů divokých oslů afrických (Equus africanus), hlavně forem osla danikilského (E. africanus taeniopus), nubijského (E. a. africanus) a somálského (E. a. somaliensis). Přibližuje též dostupné znalosti o jejich biologii a početních stavech populace těchto kriticky ohrožených (osel somálský) až pravděpodobně vyhubených (danikilský, nubijský) forem.
