We cordially invite you to attend the lecture of prof. Olega Gendelman (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Technion)

Entitled:

Energy exchange, localization and transient phenomena in essentially non-linear oscillatory systems,

to be held in the ITAM AS CR (Prosecká 76), Prague, on 21st June 2017, at 14:00.

Abstract: Over recent years, a lot of progress has been achieved in understanding of the relationship between localization and transport of energy in essentially non-linear oscillatory systems. In this lecture we are going to demonstrate that the structure of the resonance manifold can be conveniently described in terms of canonical action-angle variables. Such formalism has important theoretical advantages: all resonance manifolds may be described at the same level of complexity, appearance of additional conservation laws on these manifolds is easily proven both in autonomous and non-autonomous settings. The harmonic balance - based complexification approach, used in many previous studies on the subject, is shown to be a particular case of the canonical formalism. Moreover, application of the canonic averaging allows treatment of much broader variety of dynamical models. As an example, energy exchanges in a system of coupled vibro-impact oscillators are considered. Other example addresses an escape of classical particle from infinite-range potential well under periodic external forcing. Further generalizations of the formalism describe travelling waves and breathers in strongly nonlinear discrete lattices and continuous systems.

Performance of Piles under Seismic Impacts from PBEE and Reliability Analyses Using EQWEAP Procedures

Thursday, November 26, at 10:00 AM
ITAM, AS CR, Prosecká 76, Prague 9

Abstract: Seismic behavior and performance of the piles can be studied using simplified one-dimensional wave equation analysis called EQWEAP. This solution was found compatible with the rigorous FEM solutions. Using such analysis, the performance based seismic design of the pile foundation becomes easily accessible. This presentation will mainly discuss the methods used in this approach with the probability and reliability based analyses to evaluate the seismic resistance of the pile foundation under various seismic hazard concerns.

About the speaker: Prof. Der-Wen Chang works in the Department of Civil Engineering at Tamkang University. His research is concentrated on Soil Dynamics, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil-Structure Interactions, in particular on

  • Dynamic Modelling of Pile Behaviours Using Wave Equations
  • Performance Based Seismic Design of Piles
  • Simulation and Data Interpretation of Passive Ground Anchor Failures
  • Modelling of SASW, FWD Testing on Pavements
