Conference venue

The conference lectures will take place in the conference facilities of the Clarion Congress Hotel Olomouc.

Modelling 2019 will be held in the Moravian city Olomouc in the east part of the Czech Republic. The city is located on the Morava River, and it is the historical capital city of Moravia.

The history of the city started in the 2nd century as a Roman military fort and continued through the period of Great Moravia to the middle ages, when Moravia become a part of the Czech lands. Great Moravia accepted Christianity and hosted the Saints Cyril and Methodius, who made a Slavonic translation of the bible, and introduced Slavonic language into the Christian liturgy. The church then played important role in Olomouc, where a bishopric was founded in 1063 and raised into archbishopric in 1777. The city has numerous historic religious buildings. The most prominent is the Saint Wenceslas Cathedral, founded before 1107 within in the compound of Olomouc Castle. We can also mention the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on the Holy Hill, which is a part of the city.

Olomouc contains several large squares. The dominant feature of the main one is the renaissance Town Hall completed in the 15th century and hosting an astronomical clock constructed around the same time. Note that the original decoration was damaged during the Second World War and restored then in the style of socialist realism. The main square is adorned with the Holy Trinity Column, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The column is 35 m high, decorated by many sculptures, finished and consecrated on the 9th September 1754 in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. Another monument is the set of six Baroque fountains with figural decoration inspired by ancient mythology.

Olomouc is the site of the oldest university in Moravia, and the second oldest in the Czech Republic. The university was founded in 1573 as a public university run by the Jesuit order. The university was fully restored in 1946 and renamed Palacký University of Olomouc. At present the university includes eight faculties and is amongst the largest in the Czech Republic.
