SCOPE
EUMETSAT - CHMI training course on use of rapid scan data for monitoring and nowcasting of high impact weather, will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, from 2 - 6 November 2015.
The course, intended namely for European forecasters and PhD students of meteorology, will build up on similar workshops and courses held in the Czech Republic in 2002, 2005 and 2010, as well as on the Convection Working Group workshop held in 2012.
The topic of "rapid scan data" has been selected with regard to anticipated operational availability of more frequent rapid scan data (2.5-minute and 1-minute data) on the new generations of geostationary weather satellites (namely MTG-I, Himawari-8 and GOES-R/S), which will replace the present generations of GEO satellites within next couple of years. Thus, the main purpose of the course will be to demonstrate the benefits of more frequent rapid scan data (e.g. using the 2.5-min experimental data collected with MSG satellites in 2012 and 2013, the 1-min data from GOES-14 from the SRSOR campaign, or numerical model simulations), comparing these to presently available 5-minute RSS and 15-minute MSG data. Besides demonstrating the benefits of the higher frequency data on cases of deep convective storms, other high impact weather situations will be addressed as well.
